July Hail Prep: 10 Things to Do Before the Storm

July can bring sudden storms, strong winds, and hail across Colorado. Being a little prepared ahead of time can help you protect your home, your vehicle, and your ability to respond quickly if damage happens.

Before hail hits

• Secure outdoor items (trash cans, patio furniture, decor) that can become projectiles.

• If hail is possible, prepare coverings for windows and consider moving items that could be damaged.

• Know your shelter plan and review it with your household.

• Charge devices and keep important contacts accessible.

• Keep your policy/insurance info handy (digital or printed).

• Plan for after-storm documentation: take photos/videos when it’s safe.

• Clear your yard safely after conditions improve—avoid standing under damaged trees/structures.

• Protect your vehicle when you can (garage/covered parking).

• Avoid immediate repairs that change what happened—document first when safe.

• Stay safe: don’t attempt risky tasks during or right after severe weather.

After hail (when safe)

• Document damage with photos/videos from multiple angles.

• Write down key details (date/time, what you noticed, any observations).

• Save receipts for any necessary temporary repairs.

Wildfire risk can be a concern in parts of Colorado during the summer. While you can’t control the weather, you can take steps that may help reduce risk and improve readiness for your household.

Easy wildfire-readiness steps

• Clear defensible space: remove dry brush and debris near structures when appropriate.

• Check roof and gutters for leaves/debris buildup that can increase ignition risk.

• Keep firewood and flammable materials stored safely away from structures.

• Make an evacuation plan: decide where you’d go and how you’ll get alerts.

• Create a “grab list” of key items and important documents.

• Know your community alerts sources and share your plan with family/housemates.

If wildfire conditions change

• Follow local guidance immediately.

• Prioritize safety over property.

• If you’re relocating, take what you can and focus on having your essentials ready.
