Welcome to April with State Farm!

Prepare Your Home for Spring Showers – Protect What Matters Most

Spring is here, and with it comes the rain! While April showers bring May flowers, they can also bring unexpected water damage to your home. Heavy rainfall, clogged gutters, and poor drainage can lead to leaks, mold growth, and costly repairs if you’re not prepared.

Here are some essential tips to help you protect your home this spring:

  • Inspect and Clean Gutters: Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and damage your roof, siding, and foundation. Remove leaves and debris to ensure proper drainage.

  • Check Your Roof for Damage: Look for missing or damaged shingles and repair them promptly to prevent leaks.

  • Maintain Drainage Systems: Ensure that downspouts direct water at least 3-4 feet away from your home’s foundation to avoid flooding in your basement or crawlspace.

  • Test Your Sump Pump: If you have a sump pump, test it to make sure it’s working properly before heavy rains arrive.

  • Seal Cracks and Gaps: Inspect your foundation, windows, and doors for cracks or gaps where water could enter and seal them with appropriate weatherproofing materials.

  • Landscape Wisely: Grade your yard so that water flows away from your home rather than toward it. Consider adding rain gardens or other water-absorbing landscaping.

Know Your Coverage:

It’s important to remember that standard homeowners' insurance policies typically cover water damage caused by sudden incidents like burst pipes or storms, but they often exclude flood damage caused by rising water or heavy rain accumulation. Flood insurance is a separate policy offered through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) that my Agency is able to help quote.

Are you properly covered?

At State Farm, we’re here to help you assess your risk and coverage needs. Don’t wait until the next storm hits—contact us today for a free insurance review. We’ll help you understand your policies and discuss flood insurance options to ensure your home and belongings are protected.
